Pet Insurance
You can get pet insurance before surgery, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you should. The condition your pet needs surgery for would be considered a pre-existing condition, which means the surgery would not be covered. Neither would any follow-up care (medication, rehab, etc.) or future recurrences of the condition.
That said, if you sign up now, your dog or cat would still be eligible for pet insurance coverage for new accidents and illnesses. So while enrolling early (before they get a diagnosis or need surgery) is recommended, pet insurance can still help you save on future vet bills for other issues outside of pre-existing conditions.

Like other pet insurance providers, Fetch does not cover pre-existing conditions. A pre-existing condition is any injury, illness or condition that you or your veterinarian notice your pet has (or shows signs of) either:
However, Fetch is one of just a few providers that cover curable pre-existing conditions. Here’s how it works: if your pet has an injury or illness and then goes 12 months without signs, symptoms or treatment, that injury or illness is considered curable and is eligible for coverage. Curable pre-existing conditions can include UTIs, respiratory infections, vomiting and diarrhea.
